Introduction
In 2021, I had the opportunity to work with Purple Spice Kitchen, a UK-based restaurant dedicated to bringing authentic Nigerian flavours to both Nigerians and diaspora communities longing for a taste of home. The owner, a talented chef, approached me to redesign the restaurant’s logo, seeking a fresh look that would appeal to a wider audience without losing the essence of the brand.
The Challenge
In 2021, I was approached by the owner and chef of Purple Spice Kitchen, a UK-based restaurant specializing in authentic Nigerian cuisine. The restaurant caters to Nigerians and diaspora communities who seek a taste of home through traditional dishes. While the business had established a loyal customer base, the chef wanted a refreshed logo to reflect the brand’s vibrant essence. However, she had a few requirements: I needed to preserve some key elements from the original logo, particularly the color palette, which held sentimental value for the brand.
The challenge was to balance modernization with familiarity. The new logo needed to appeal to both long-standing patrons and new customers, without losing the original essence that made Purple Spice Kitchen special.
The Solution
After reviewing the existing logo and discussing the chef’s vision for Purple Spice Kitchen, I proposed a refined design that retained the original colours but introduced a cooler, more modern aesthetic. By adding subtle shading and softer tones to the colour palette, I aimed to give the logo a contemporary yet warm look that conveyed both authenticity and sophistication.
This updated design would maintain the familiar elements of the previous logo, ensuring brand continuity, while enhancing its appeal to a broader audience who appreciated both Nigerian culture and modern aesthetics.
The Solution
Understanding the Brand: I began by discussing the chef’s vision in depth. We explored the core values of Purple Spice Kitchen—a commitment to authenticity, a passion for Nigerian cuisine, and a desire to create a welcoming experience for those who miss the flavors of home.
Preserving Key Elements: I reviewed the original logo’s colors and design elements, focusing on ways to retain its core identity. Since the chef wanted to preserve the color scheme, I decided to work within the same palette, adjusting the hues to create a cooler, more refined appearance.
Color Refresh with Shading: To bring a modern touch to the logo, I introduced cooler, milder shades that softened the original colors. This subtle shading added depth to the design, giving it a professional and polished look without diverging too far from the original identity.
Iterative Feedback: Throughout the process, I shared design drafts with the chef to ensure her vision was accurately reflected. This iterative feedback helped us refine the design until it perfectly captured the essence of Purple Spice Kitchen.
The Result
The redesigned logo successfully preserved the recognizable elements of Purple Spice Kitchen’s original brand identity, while offering a fresh, modern look that resonated with both loyal customers and new audiences. The cooler tones added a sense of sophistication to the logo, reflecting the chef’s dedication to quality and her passion for Nigerian cuisine.
